A TESOL Certificate provides you with the skills to teach English to students whose first language is not English. Edenz Colleges provides a range of TESOL qualifications.
- Trinity Certificate in TESOL (Trinity College, London)
The course is for native speakers of English, or non-native fluent speakers. The course requirements would not be attainable by candidates with a lesser language ability.
- Certificate in TESOL (NZQA approved)
This course, approved by New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), is more suitable to non-native speakers whose English language level is not up to the advanced level necessary to pass the Trinity standard. Both Certificate courses share most of the input lessons, but the Assignment requirement and Teaching Practices are different.

Trinity College London, the international examinations board incorporating Trinity Guildhall, offers accredited qualifications in English language and the performing and creative arts.
The Certificate in TESOL from Trinity, London is an initial teaching training qualification. It is internationally recognised by the British Council and by employers and authorities around the world. Trinity Training is offered in about a hundred centers worldwide. Standarts are maintained on each course by a visiting Trinity Moderator.
The certificate is an initial training qualification but for experienced teachers, the year long part time Licentiate Diploma in TESOL would be preferable.

- Why study TESOL at Edenz Colleges?
Edenz Colleges is the largest Trinity registered center outside Europe. We are one of the largest teacher training centers for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) in New Zealand. Edenz brought the Trinity Certificate course to Auckland in 1994 and we now offer about 10 courses each year.
- Who should consider applying for this course?
If a teacher wants to work in a New Zealand language school, or in a quality school overseas, they need a recognised qualification. Trinity College London Cert TESOL is an internationally recognised qualification. In New Zealand and overseas, the Trinity TESOL Cert. is one of only two industry accepted entry qualifications.
- What is the Entry Requirement to apply for this course?
Although a degree is an advantage, it not essential in working in English language teaching in New Zealand and most other countries. A high level of English language skills is essential though, and that is tested by us prior to acceptance on a Certificate course.
Every candidate completes a pre-interview English task and then meets with one of our tutors who assess the applicants suitability for the course. Entry requirements are at the discretion of the Course Director. As Course Passes is not guaranteed, the Tutor is careful to ensure that all Trainees selected are capable. After the acceptance interview, an Applicant will be informed immediately of the result. Edenz prides itself on a pass rate averaging 96% per annum and so you can be sure that if you are accepted, we know you can do it!
The minimum age for course entry is 18 years.
- What is the structure of this course?
- Preparation
Trainees are required to complete the pre-course preparation task, the ‘Distance Learning Module (DLM) prior to the course start. Our DLM ensures all trainees have some understanding of grammar and parts of speech before the course to so everyone starts the course with the same base knowledge.
- Input sessions
These include lesson observation, teaching approaches, methodology, principles of and practice in teaching grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, error correction and teaching skills. Trainees are taught how to use resources such as textbooks, supplementary materials and audio visual aids. Also lesson preparation, teaching practice in front of live classes and feedback constitute the practical component of the course. There are 6 hours of classroom Teaching Practice observed by the trainers.
- How long does this take?
The Trinity Certificate course is 160 hours of inputs and Teaching Practices, classroom management and assignments. Additionally there are one on one tutorials and mentoring. All Trinity Cert TESOL courses cover the same material, but differ only in the different levels of intensity.
- Full-time Trinity Intensive 4 weeks
4 weeks on site (9 hours per weekday) plus lesson preparation and home assignments this option will probably require the trainee to work more than 10 hours per day.
- Semi-Intensive Trinity 12 weeks
9~10 weeks on site (3 weekday afternoons from 1.00- 6.30 pm.) plus 3 weeks home study with DLM totaling 12 weeks. Later in the course two of the teaching days are Teaching Practice and one day each week is for Inputs. During the on site course, the components are typically on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons, although the days may change to suit courses.
- Part-Time Trinity 24 week
24 weeks on site, first week of intensive inputs full time, then one weekday evening (5.00 – 9.00pm per week for 23 weeks). This course is designed for people currently in full time employment seeking to change their job in the future. The intensive week would be held during the educational holiday immediately after Easter and the course runs to end of September.
- Which Trinity course length is more suitable?
The intensity of the course depends on a number of factors, such as current English skills, entry qualification, previous education and/or experience, the Applicants preference or time available. The trainer during the pre acceptance interview may offer advice, as to whether they consider a particular course option to be more suitable.
- What is required to pass this course?
The trainee must complete all the course assignments and demonstrate that they can teach effectively using the ‘communicative method’ During 6 hours of observed teaching practice, the trainees will demonstrate their teaching skills to the trainer and will then present their work to the Trinity Moderator at the end of the course for assessment.
- What do I get at the end of this course?
Edenz will provide a transcript of the trainees results within a couple of days of the completion of the course and will award a letter confirming that they have completed.
Additional Qualification – The NZQA approved ‘Certificate in TESOL’ may be completed in conjunction with Trinity TESOL, conditional on fulfilling additional requirements and payment of an additional fee of $120 for assessment and administration. The trainee also needs to purchase the two prescribed texts required.
Certificate in TESOL (NZQA Approved)
The Trinity Certificate is couriered to Edenz from London about a month after the course.The Certificate in TESOL (NZQA Approved) is suitable to non-native speakers who do not have an English proficiency level high enough to satisfy Trinity entry requirements (IELTS 7.5). It is still a highly recognised qualification, and will provide the trainee with the skills required to teach at an excellent standard in their own country. Graduates include people going overseas to do aid work or as missionaries. This course can be either taken as a stand alone course or in conjunction with General English Classes if these are required.

- What is the Entry Requirement to apply for this course?
Applicants need a strong level of English ability and a good level of fluency especially in spoken communication. Candidates are required to have an interview with a course Tutor, and complete a pre-interview test prior to the interview. They do a controlled English task during the pre-course interview, prior to meeting with one of our course tutors. An IELTS score or an IELTS level entry test result will be required for non-native English speakers. Other qualifying studies, or work experience will be considered in the decision. Otherwise an assessment is made by the Head Trainer. Telephone interviews are possible if applicants are overseas at the time of enrolment. The interviewing Tutor is careful to ensure that all Trainees selected are capable. Entry decisions are at the discretion of the Course Director.

Trainees are taught how to use resources such as textbooks, supplementary materials and audio visual aids. There are 6 hours of classroom Teaching Practice observed by the trainers.
- Assignments
Trainees are required to complete several written assignments in addition to the teaching and classroom management training. Tutors are available during the first six weeks for discussion on any problem areas with the exercises. They will also complete an exercise based on set course texts "How to Teach English" (by Jeremy Harmer) and ‘Oxford Practice Grammar’.
- How long does this course take?
This Certificate course is 160 hours of inputs and lectures plus tutorials and mentoring, and additional assignments to total the 400 hours to learning required for an NZQA approved Certificate.
- Full-time Intensive 4 weeks option
4 weeks on site plus (9 hours per weekday) plus 6 weeks of preparation and home assignments The 4 weeks intensive on site will probably require the trainee to work more than 10 hours per day. The last major assignment can be spread after the completing the ‘on site’ intensive course.
- Full-time InteSemi-Intensive 12 weeks option
9~10 weeks on site (3 weekday afternoons from 1.00- 6.30 pm.) plus 2~3 weeks home study with DLM totaling 12 weeks - This course has been spread over a longer period, to ensures trainees have enough time to complete the course. During the ‘on site’ course, the components are typically on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons, although the days may change to suit the course requirements.

25 weeks on site, first week of intensive inputs full time, then one weekday evening (5.00 – 9.00pm per week for 23 weeks). - How is the TESOL Certificate (NZQA approved) different to Trinity TESOL Certificate?
Both the Trinity and NZQA TESOL Certificate trainees have the inputs and tutoring together. The Trinity Cert trainees will have additional teaching practices. NZQA teaching practices will be peer teaching. Both Cert courses have written assignment, but trainees on this course need to do a text book based assignment to complete the 400 hour course requirement.
