» TESOL Diploma Course

Edenz Colleges provides a range of TESOL qualifications.
  • Trinity Diploma in TESOL (Trinity College, London)
The course is for native speakers in English or other fluent users of English. The course requirements would not be attainable by trainees with lesser language ability.

  • Diploma in TESOL (NZQA approved)
This course has been approved by New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). It is more suitable to non-native speakers whose English language level is not up to the advanced level necessary to pass the Trinity standard. Both Diploma courses share most of the input lessons, but the Assignment requirement and Teaching Practices are different.

Trinity Diploma in TESOL (start October and February)

Edenz Colleges were the first school outside of Europe to be granted validation from Trinity College for the Revised Licentiate Diploma in TESOL in 2003. Graduates of this course are highly sought after, by reputable schools all over the world. They are able to take up Senior Teaching positions, or positions in Teacher Training or Educational Management.

The Diploma in TESOL is a course in advanced communicative methodology skills for experienced teachers. This Internationally recognised qualification is an essential qualification for teachers aspiring to Senior teacher (DOS) roles or school management positions. The Diploma in TESOL from Trinity, London, is suitable for experienced teachers with at least two years’ full time teaching experience. The DipTESOL is accredited by Trinity College London, and is recognised by the British Council as one of their preferred qualifications. Assessment is via four units, which may be completed separately or together. The course may be completed in one year, or spread over two or three years.

  • Who should consider applying for this course?

Experienced teachers who seek to lift their skills to a higher level, as well as those looking to school management jobs need advanced qualifications. The Trinity DipTESOL is one of only two internationally recognised and externally validated advanced-level qualifications in the teaching of ESOL/EFL/ESL. It delivers a balanced input of up-to-date theory and practice, essential for a career in ELT management or teacher training. Benchmarked at Level 7 (postgraduate level) on the UK National Qualifications Framework. It also provides a sound foundation for a university Masters program in TESOL or Applied Linguistics.

  • What is the entry requirement to apply for this course?

Trainee applicants will be degree graduates or the equivalent (in any subject), and possess a Cert TESOL or an equivalent qualification (e.g. CELTA), with appropriate experience to be determined by the course interviewer. Applicants need to have a minimum of 2 years' full-time ESOL/EFL/ESL class teaching experience, and to be currently teaching either full-time or part-time. This is essential for completion of the classroom-research components of the course. Where an applicant does not possess a recognised degree qualification, Edenz will seek to establish equivalency within the New Zealand accreditation matching system, and from the awarding institution or from Trinity College.

  • What is the structure of this course?

    • Distance Learning
The course will be mostly delivered by "Moodle", a Virtual Learning Environment designed to help educators deliver online courses. This is part of our Distance Learning program. The course has a two-week face-to-face (f2f) session at the end of the online inputs, either in London at the start of November, or in Auckland from mid-November. According to the start date chosen, the three assessed assignments will be completed either before or after the f2f phase.

The distance phase will be delivered by the Edenz Colleges diploma tutor, Tony Foster. He will post weekly work packages on our Internet Moodle site, covering the three main course modules: Grammar & Lexis, Phonetics & Phonology and Teaching & Learning. Candidates will in turn submit their work online for responses from both the tutor and their peers. During the distance phase the trainees will have the opportunity to 'chat' to other course members (via messaging, Skype or Moodle forums), exchange ideas and provide support to one another. Input sessions will be user-friendly with a balance of input and problem-solving and a wide range of stimuli (interactive audio-visual websites, online articles and prescribed texts).

    • Face to Face (on-site)
During the face-to-face phase we will arrange for in-house tutor observation and assessment of the trainees teaching. Candidates working within easy reach of either the London or Auckland centre will be able to undertake their assessed teaching at their own school, but where this is not possible Edenz will provide the TP classes. They will also work with their tutors on all the necessary areas as preparation for the Written Examination, the Phonology Interview and Teaching Practice, observed by the Trinity Examiner at the end of the f2f session.

    • Duration
Most of the course is by Distance Learning and therefore very flexible. It may be completed over a period of 13 months to three years.

  • When will this course take place?

The Trinity DipTESOL at Edenz has two entry points each year, in October and February.

    • Face-to-face phase (2 weeks)
This f2f course will be full-time during November, in the UK or New Zealand.

The NZQA Diploma in TESOL is a one year course of teacher training in advanced Communicative English Language Teaching. The successful Candidates will be awarded the level 7 ‘Diploma in TESOL’, approved by New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).

  • About Diploma in TESOL (NZQA approved)

The NZQA Dip TESOL program is a full-time course, which runs over a year. The NZQA course has a total length 1200 hours, made up of on-site work and distance learning. The program is suitable for overseas Candidates who may prefer to complete much of the course via ‘distance learning’, or for overseas students who wish to add to their skills while working. In addition to the on-site study and classroom teaching practices, there are a number of assignments and a project.

Some classes will be presented via internet ‘Moodle’; therefore each Candidate must have basic computer skills, plus a reliable computer with broadband internet access.

  • Who should consider applying for this course?

This course is suitable for experienced non-native language teachers, who want to advance their skills, or may in future seek course or school management jobs. For experienced English teachers who are native speakers, the Trinity Licentiate Diploma in TESOL would be more suitable option.

  • What is the entry requirement to apply for this course?

All Candidates will be required to complete a process of testing and interviews prior to being accepted onto the course. The acceptable course entry level is: fluency in English language, a high level of competency in grammar and at least two years of teaching experience and basic computer operation competency. The Candidates should be familiar with communicative methodology, or will otherwise need to complete a short course in an internationally recognised ESOL Teaching Certification as part of their diploma preparation.

  • What is the structure of this course?

Much of the course follows closely alongside the Trinity Diploma syllabus and timetable. Some of the diploma input lectures are presented ‘on-line’ and so several parts of the course can be completed by distance learning. Alongside extensive reading, Candidates have regular weekly meetings with their tutors and other candidates through the Diploma Web Site Moodle and via Skype. Each Candidate is also required to prepare and present to the examiner a personal Research Topic.

As part of the Dip TESOL, qualified candidates with insufficiently experience in communicative methodology, will have the opportunity to do extra training in the Certificate in TESOL programs, to help with background understanding of communicative methodology.

There is also opportunity for Candidates teachers to take additional on-site courses in advanced grammar instruction. They may also require additional courses in communicative teaching over 400 hours, as preparation for the intensive face to face stage of the diploma.

    • On-site program
During their on-site part of the course, the Candidates will have practice lessons with their tutors to improve their teaching techniques and lesson staging. The Candidates prepare for final Observed Teaching demonstration with some observed practice lessons, prior to the final demonstration to the examiner. There will be a personal project and a written exam. All candidates will be in NZ for the face to face in November each year.

Candidates studying for the Dip TESOL on this course will provide demonstration lessons with ‘live’ class demonstrations of their teaching skills observed by the tutors and finally as a presentation to the examiner.

    • Student Work /Study Visa
This Dip TESOL course currently qualifies overseas teachers to apply for a student work visa which allows them to work up to 20 hours per week. It is expected that the Candidates continue to ‘hone’ their skills by regular work, while studying. As current Immigration policy stands, graduates from this course are able to apply for a one year working visa in order to apply for a permanent position.
